Research Data Centre at Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (FDZ at KBA)
The Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, is within the scope of the Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr (BMDV), Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. It contributes significantly to road safety and the provision of information on road traffic.

About the Data Centre
Initiated by the BMDV, the research data centre Forschungsdatenzentrum im Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (FDZ im KBA) provides anonymised quantitative microdata free of charge for independent scientific research.
Available data
Additions to the Register of Driver Fitness (cross-sectional data from 2015 onwards, only in German)
The Register of Driver Fitness records following decisions:
- Legally binding decisions concerning criminal or administrative offences if they are listed in Annex 13 to Section 40 Fahrerlaubnis-Verordnung (FeV)
- Decisions made by the driving licence authorities concerning the withdrawal, refusal or newly grant of driving licences
- Decisions concerning measures provided for by the Fahreignungs-Bewertungssystem, the Driver Fitness Assessment System
Stock of vehicles recorded in the Central Vehicle Register (cross-sectional data from 2015 onwards, only in German)
The stock of vehicles consists of motor vehicles and trailers, which are recorded in the Central Vehicle Register on January, 1st of a year. Not considered are vehicles with an insurance plate such as bicycles with an auxiliary motor, mopeds and scooters. It includes a comprehensive package of technical information such as type of fuel, nominal power, the emission class and many more. This package of technical information is complemented by demographic and regional characteristics of the vehicle keeper.
Data Access
After signing a data use agreement, scientific use files are available for download (off-site) or during a research visit at the research data centre (on-site), depending on the degree of data anonymity. Currently, only data on the additions to the Register of Driver Fitness are available on-site.
