Accreditation by the German Data Forum (RatSWD) and CoreTrustSeal certification are the key quality elements of the research data centre (RDC) infrastructure. Successful accreditation and certification are clear signs of trustworthy data handling. This is particularly important with respect to long-term archiving of sensitive data. However, many RDC still have different workflows, little standardised material (e.g., legal agreements), and few process descriptions. The FAIR principles and the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference system can help establish and improve processes for data ingestion, data use, and data handling at RDCs.
By making available benchmark processes, we support RDCs in maintaining quality standards. Processes include data access, data ingestion, and—to some extent—data handling within RDCs. The work package will provide recommendations on workflow harmonisation and best practice templates for data usage and data archiving agreements. Further, we will provide support to RDCs seeking RatSWD accreditation and/or the CoreTrustSeal. Lastly, we also offer support on general issues relating to RDC processes.
By the end of 2021, we will make available a collection of data use agreements currently used in RatSWD-accredited RDCs as well as proposals for legally examined data use agreements.
